dear body, honing in on your home(s) 🏡

Welcome home!

I would like to invite you to join me on a journey of self-reflection, connection and grounding. Let us embark on this exploration by turning our attention to two homes we each possess but may not have given equal importance to.

The first home I speak of is YOUR BODY. This most faithful companion has been there since the day you were born and will remain with you till your last breath. It carries you, feeds you, renews you, and allows you to interact with the world around you.

Your second home is the place you reside in, be it a brick-and-mortar house, a high-rise flat or a cosy cottage nestled in the countryside. It may be filled with mundane stuff such as Tupperware and weekend to-do lists or exciting distractions such as a favorite spot on the couch or a pile of Amazon packages waiting to be unwrapped.

In our current world, we are often persuaded by the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) messages of modern marketing that encourage us to seek outside of ourselves for what we need or desire. However, this can be an illusion, and it’s easy to lose sight of the true essence of what we seek - which is connection and grounding.

Stay with me, as what I will share with you can hopefully inspire and guide you towards a discovery of how to truly ground yourself, no matter what external circumstances may be.

Just imagine for a moment, the early stages of the global pandemic. Probably like many of you, I found myself confined to the safety of a home. Although not my own, I was comforted by the warm and inviting abode of my dear friend, Lauren. With Lauren, her cheerful canine Dozer, and myself, we formed a unique, somewhat unexpected alliance against the enforced isolation that was gripping the world outside.

(We also had a lot of 🍕+ 🍷) 😊

In the Before-Covid era, I had a set routine. A routine that included visiting local studios where I would participate in yoga and meditation sessions. Fresh off an 8-week yoga odyssey in the tropical paradise of Thailand, I was suddenly faced with a stark change. I dearly missed my outdoor sessions on a serene island.

The sudden halt brought about by the pandemic was undoubtedly disruptive, but as with every cloud, there’s a silver lining. The imposed lockdown forced me to step away from my usual routine and immerse into an online world that brimmed with untapped possibilities.

What I found was an abundant repository of online wellness routines that served as a constant source of solace in a time of chaos. Virtual yoga sessions with my dear friend Melissa (who was in Hawaii), my dear friend Alina (who was in Dubai), and a host of other yogis became an oasis of peace in a desert of uncertainty.

It was an enlightening revelation – the flexibility and comfort of practicing from home, and the ability to connect with a global community of wellness guides.

Now, let's consider some figures. Think about the cost of commuting to your wellness studio, the peace you lose in traffic, the emissions from your car, and the monetary cost of the class itself - does it all add up? Moreover, you're still bound by the studio's schedule, and the local guides as a limited resource.

Is there not a better way to balance wellness with convenience?

Turns out there is, and it's far simpler than you'd expect: your living room! Or your bedroom, or even your garden. Any space within your home that brings you peace can be transformed into your personal wellness space. With the power of the internet, you no longer have to 'go' anywhere to fulfill your wellness needs. You can create your wellness wonderland right at home.

NOTE: (I am not saying you should never go to a studio ever again. What I am saying is: It is much more practical and convenient to utilize both options as they fit YOUR schedule.)

These are the thoughts and tools I want to further share with you. The transformational power of home practices, the benefits I've unearthed, and how you can make the switch too. Can you imagine the possibilities? Switching to home-based wellness practices not only makes self-care more accessible and adaptable, but it also allows you to cultivate a personal space that nurtures tranquillity and peace amidst the cacophony of modern life.

Let's connect to our bodies, and by extension, our first homes, right from the comfort of our living rooms. I hope you’ll join me in challenging old habits and embracing new methods of self-care and personal wellness in this ever-evolving world.
