dear body, the tiger is not chasing you 🐅 (WHEW!)


Remember last week in the speeding Uber? The driver’s eyes darting between the road and his phones?

MY HEART POUNDING. MY ADRENALINE SPIKING.

This is a snapshot of the reoccurring, unnoticed assaults on our nervous systems every day.

As I told you last week, I found myself in this exact situation: Fresh from a calming yoga session, my body tense and alert in the car. I was hyper-aware, an unexpected passenger in an abstract rollercoaster of stress and calm.

But here’s the thing: This Uber ride is just a mere fragment of the myriad stressors we face in our bustling world, brimming with constant distractions.

Our bodies are being pushed into fight or flight mode far more often than they were designed to handle. Sound familiar?

There’s no tiger in pursuit! 🐅

Ever heard of fight or flight?

This innate by-product of evolution has readied us to confront or flee a threatening situation.

So, how do we disrupt this endless loop of stress?

Years ago, I stumbled upon two straightforward, yet profound, strategies to regulate my nervous system in my day to day life:

  1. DND: Do Not Disturb – make this your mantra for digital devices. Silence the symphony of the cyber world, and give your mind some respite. My phone doesn’t shout anymore at the arrival of every message. I’ve decided to mute this constant chatter permanently. It's HEAVEN.
  2. Time-blocking tranquillity - Make space for moments of peace in your bustling schedule. A mindful class, for me, is an uninterrupted period of calm amidst the daily clamour. This anticipation gives me a breath of tranquillity in the chaos - especially when I block it right in the middle of my day! 😁 (when I can, I block TWO per day!)

No matter the cacophony of distractions, don’t forget to claim your quiet moments. It’s not just essential, it’s a necessity. Trust me, you won’t regret hitting that ‘do not disturb’ button or setting aside an hour for yourself. Try one (or two!) this week.
